Chicago writing guide
The Chicago writing style/Chicago manual of style is also referred to the turabian writing guide. The style is also known as the documentation note style or the humanities style. The key concept of the style is placing bibliographic citations either at the bottom of a page or at the end of a paper. The Chicago/Turabian is commonly used is a notes system/style of writing – mainly used in history and arts. The basic knowledge that students need to have when using the Chicago style of writing or the turabian style is that citations used in the paper can either be in the notes format or in the parenthesis format; the format to be used is usually stated by the instructor.
The turabian style/Chicago manual of style recommends documenting of different items in terms of notes. The items that are supposed to be documented include: direct quotations, summaries and paraphrases, information that is common knowledge and that does not appear in the standard reference work, the last item that should be documented include any piece of information that would otherwise seem to be writer’s if they were not referenced.
The notes usually occurs at the bottom of a page or at the end of a paper. A note documented by placing a superscript number at the end of a sentence containing the direct quotation, paraphrase/summary within the body of a paper. No punctuation should be used at the end of the superscript number. Example of a superscript. 1In the endnote/footnote itself, the same number used in the summary/quotation should be used; it should not be in superscript though. The notes should be single spaced and the first lane should be indented five spaces from the margin – put a period and one space after the note number. An example is given below.
